Carver Parents
Every father and mother is an educator in the lives of their children! You hold the keys to the power of education. As stated by the renowned Dr. George Washington Carver, “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.”
Over the course of my career as an educator, I have come to realize the power parents have on the education of their children, not only from the tons of research that overwhelming state this reality, but also from my own empirical and doctoral studies over the past two decades. I have been an educator for over 25 years and have come in contact with thousands and thousands of fathers and mothers, who expressed a resilient love for their children and a respect for education that has been less talked about in much of the educational research conducted during this span. It is remarkable how such a powerful voice in the process of student success has become virtually silent in academic discourse, unless discussed in terms of “reading to your child at home,” or “helping your child with nightly homework.” The power of the parent’s voice goes so much deeper and is much broader than those short conversations during the back-to-school night and parent-teacher conferences.
Parents hold the key to unlocking the very nature of “teaching & learning” that is paramount for student success. The parent-child relationship that is cultivated at home is just as powerful as the teacher-child relationship that is developed in the classroom. This book will discuss in detail the “Eight parent skills for student success” captured in my previous two editions that were revealed during my doctoral study of 10 African American fathers, who were fostering student success in their homes. All their stories, all the fathers, all of their children, and the impact this would have on underserved populations and education as a whole enriched me as a researcher, public school educator, and a father. The skills these fathers demonstrated are common behaviors for parents who want to see their children become all they ever dreamed of; parents, who are determined to see the next generation succeed; both fathers and mothers who are developing a home similar to the one detailed in Carver's parent book: “Parent University: Fostering Academic Success in the Home.” (Order your copy today and learn more!).
WANT TO GET MORE INVOLVED AS A PARENT, JOIN CARVER'S "PARENT UNIVERSITY ON FACEBOOK!"
Parent University is a Facebook Parent-Group designed to provide parents resources they will need to build college and career readiness skills in their homes. As more and more schools and the workforce focus on the kind of skills that require critical thinking, problem-solving, scientific reasoning, remote learning from home, as well as social-emotional skills such as time management, teamwork, organization, and more, parents must rethink how they prepare their children for school and the real world. The Carver Foundation works with school districts to incorporate these skills in every grade and every classroom for long-term success for all students. Carver parents have seen the benefits of this type of education in school and at home. Join our "Parent University" today on Facebook (@MyCarver) and become part of an initiative that will build lifelong learners for success in school, college, career, and life!
